We believe that game songs, rhymes, and
chants are an important part of Black culture. Children's game songs,
rhymes, & chants can be used to help develop and reinforce self-esteem and
group-esteem. We also believe that contemporary Black adult chants such as
Black Greek letter fraternity & sorority chants are as valuable an
expression of Black culture as secular slave songs. Sharing information about past and present folk cultures of the Black Diaspora can lead to
increased knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of those cultures among people of
African descent and among people of other racial and ethnic backgrounds.
If you have any Black children's game songs, rhymes,
foot stomping "sidewalk chants", or any (clean) adult chants & rhymes that you would like to share,
please write them in the comments section below. For historical purposes,
please include the approximate years that the material was performed as well
as information on the city & state (or for those outside of the United
States), the country in which the material was performed. It would also be
helpful to include the age range and gender of the persons performing the
material. Any commentary that you would like to include would also be both
helpful and interesting!
